Treasury Secretary to Announce Harriet Tubman to Replace Andrew Jackson on $20 Bill
In 2015, Women on 20s launched a campaign to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with an iconic American woman. In a poll, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman came out on top.
Though featuring a woman on U.S. currency is long overdue, many questioned the likelihood of such a change.
The campaign and public outcry, however, sparked enough conversation to prompt the Treasury Department to act. Today Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will announce that Andrew Jackson will be replaced by Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, according to Politico.
This announcement comes after plans to replace Hamilton were scrapped.
The New York Times reports that Tubman is not the only woman who will appear on the currency and new $20 will not become available until at least 2030.
Other depictions of women and civil rights leaders will also be part of new currency designs.
The new designs, from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, would be made public in 2020 in time for the centennial of woman’s suffrage and the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. None of the bills, including a new $5 note, would reach circulation until the next decade.
