After Failing to Make Olympic Team, Kendra Harrison Breaks Track & Field World Record
23-year-old Kendra Harrison broke a decades old record in the 100-meter hurdles at the Diamond League meet in London on Friday.
Harrison completed the event in 12.20 seconds. That beats the previous record of 12.21 seconds set in 1988 by Yordanka Dankova.
She broke the U.S. record in May, but she won't be at the Olympic Games in Rio because she finished sixth with a time of 12.62 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field in June.
Harrison had a decisive lead as she took first place in the final, but she did not immediately know the record had been broken because of an incorrect time displayed on the official clock. Moments later the time was corrected, and her U.S. teammates congratulated her and she collapsed in a flood of tears.
“I wanted to come out here and show the world that I still have it even though I won't be going to the Olympics,” Harrison said.
Harrison walks away not only with a world record but a $50,000 bonus
